Hebdige & Mean Girls

When reviewing Hebdige in class, his talk of cultures really stuck out to me. Taking the word 'culture' and viewing it through multiple lenses, leads you to think about it in different contexts, completely changing the meaning of the word. We discussed culture in relation to something that is "the best that has been thought and said" that refers to a definite, over-arching term that covers the tradition and foundation in comparison to "ordinary behavior" that refers to short-term, altering interests.

Then Hebdige discusses subcultures and how they are "noise interference in the orderly sequence". To me, I interpreted this quote to mean that subcultures are 'noise' because they don't have a definite order and they're unpredictable due to their frequent transformations. This relates back to the music that I submitted for Tuesday's class. Subcultures change because interests change. Society is impacted by the media telling us what is and isn't 'in' at the moment, and what we should be interested in.

Thinking about subcultures, I instantly began thinking about Mean Girls. There is a scene where the new girl is being introduced to the different tables that hold students with different stereotypes in the lunch room.

In the clip, the Janice, who is showing the new girl around, starts talking about who's cool and who isn't. This cycles back to how there are subcultures (different stereotypes of students) amongst a larger culture (the high school) and how the subcultures reflect the differences and various interests between the individuals.
