"Even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element: its presence in time and space, its unique existence at the place where it happens to be" (Benjamin 38, 2012). I like this idea that Benjamin talks about being in the presence in time and space. You can re-create a million paintings of the Mona Lisa but only one was created in its presence in time and space. The reason why I like this so much because I can relate it to sports for me.
Also the idea of authenticity has always fascinated me. Benjamin touches on this subject saying "The authenticity of a thing is the essence of all that is transmissible from its beginning, ranging from its substantive duration to its testimony to the history which it has experienced" (Benjamin 39, 2012). My favorite part of this quote is the end part that says "the history which it has experienced." The original Mona Lisa has "been and seen" so much of the history in this world and it is astonishing to think of that. "the technique of reproduction detaches the reproduced object from the domain of tradition" (Benjamin 39, 2012).
